Melanoma and other Skin Cancers

Sun & Skin Cancer Facts

  • Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the US.
  • More than 90% of skin cancers are caused by sun exposure
  • Protecting the skin as a child and teenager can significantly reduce the risk of skin cancer and premature skin aging as an adult.
  • People of every color are at risk! Did you know that Bob Marley had melanoma?

What can YOU do?

  • Get your birthday suit checked on your birthday! Make an appointment to see one of our dermatologists, who will conduct a full body scan (skin cancers can "hide" in between toes, on the scalp--anywhere). For those at high risk for/with a history of melanoma, we offer mole screening and a computerized surveillance service.
  • Protect yourself and your family when you're in the sun (click for ideas)

What WE are working to do about melanoma and skin cancer:

Prevent it - While Florida sunshine can be wonderful, it can also be dangerous.   Education plays a major part in prevention. We speak at public schools and public forums to let individuals and families know how to be safe in the sun and how to check their own skin (between dermatologist visits) for warning signs.

Diagnose it- Since there is currently no cure for melanoma, we have to diagnose early so we can treat it .UM has state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment and provides skin cancer screenings to various communities throughout the year.

Find a cure
 - UM Dermatology is on the cutting edge of melanoma and skin cancer research.  Our researchers are working diligently to identify the sources of skin cancers as well as mechanisms to prevent and repair cancerous cells.
