Miller School Physician/Scientists Receive $3M Grant to Treat Burn Wounds with Stem Cells

A Miller School trauma surgeon who cares for burn patients and a dermatologist who is already healing chronic wounds with stem cells have been awarded $3 million from the U.S. Department of Defense to conduct the nation’s first clinical trial on the safety and efficacy of using donor mesenchymal stem cells to promote healing and reduce scarring in acute burn patients.

Robert S. Kirsner, M.D., Ph.D., professor and vice chair of dermatology and cutaneous surgery and the Stiefel Laboratories Chair, is one step closer to ending the agony associated with one of the most common chronic wounds. He was one of the investigators who conducted phase II clinical trials on HP802-247, an investigational, allogeneic, living cell bioformulation now under development for the treatment of venous leg ulcers.
